Sustainable Development

Development programs strengthen community resilience through sustainable refugee-led projects, including the planting of rooftop gardens and education initiatives. Projects such as these are vital in immediately supporting the continued livelihood of refugees, while also contributing to long-term success. Sustainable development projects allow refugees to not only have a say in the future of their community, but to be a driving force for change that will create meaningful, long-lasting improvements. Refugee Alliance International will continue to work with refugees to help identify needs now and into the future, and will work with residents to develop solutions.

Agriculture
Refugee Alliance International will plant 1,000 trees in Palestine this year to help create a sustainable future for farmers and their families. The trees provide a renewable, fresh food source for rural families, which can also be sold at local markets to generate much-needed income. Refugee Alliance International will provide farmers with trees and supplies for planting, such as protective nets, metal posts, fertilizer, water pipes, and water. Traditional farming practices will be used to help preserve water, including with irrigation systems. A team of volunteers from the local refugee camps will also assist farmers with planting and maintaining the new trees, teaching youth about traditional farming practices while preserving the agricultural heritage of the Palestinian people. For thousands of years, the local communities have used traditional farming practices to cultivate their land in a sustainable manner, which also protects the local ecosystem. Refugee Alliance International will help farmers to preserve this heritage, while also providing a source of wellbeing for themselves and the wider community.

Rooftop Gardens

Over-populated refugee camps located throughout Palestine are unable to sustain the type of traditional farming and agriculture relied upon by rural communities. Refugee communities such as Aida Refugee Camp are densely populated and lack the green space and water needed for farming. By building rooftop garden beds, Refugee Alliance International will provide residents with access to fresh produce for themselves and their families. The Raised Garden Beds utilize innovative farming techniques to bring traditional gardening to refugee camps. Families are provided with a supply package to kick-start their urban garden, including plants, trees, flowers, seeds, fertilizers, soil, and recycled building materials to create elevated flower beds. The gardens will provide a source of income for local families while over time contributing to the greenification of the camps. Greenification of refugee camps in Palestine assists in improving air quality, as well as benefiting the mental health of residents.
